Not every shingle is built for a Plains winter. Between the freeze-thaw cycles, the wind that comes off open country, and the hail that bookends the cold season, a roof here takes punishment a milder climate never sees. The good news is that the right shingle, installed correctly, handles all of it. Here is what actually matters when you choose.
Architectural beats 3-tab
Old-style 3-tab shingles are thinner, lighter, and far more likely to lift in wind. Architectural (laminated) shingles are heavier, carry stronger wind warranties, and last longer. For nearly every home in our area, an architectural shingle is the sensible floor. See how we install them on residential roofing.
Wind rating matters here
Open country means wind, and wind is what lifts shingles. Look for an architectural shingle rated for high wind, and just as importantly, make sure it is installed with the manufacturer's nailing pattern and a proper starter strip. The rating only holds if the install earns it.
Impact resistance for hail country
Nebraska sits in hail country, and standard shingles bruise and crack under hail. A Class 4 impact-resistant shingle uses a tougher mat that flexes instead of shattering, and it often earns a discount on your homeowner's policy. In higher-hail areas it is frequently worth the small premium; read are impact-resistant shingles worth it.
The cold-weather install detail
Shingles seal by warming in the sun until their adhesive strip bonds. Installed in deep cold, that bond can lag, which is why we hand-seal where needed and time replacements sensibly. We also install ice-and-water shield along the eaves and in the valleys to defend against the ice dams a Nebraska winter produces.
Which brands we install
We install GAF, Owens Corning, and CertainTeed architectural systems, each with impact-resistant options. As a GAF Master Elite contractor we can register enhanced GAF warranties.
